Supported by the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Sino Group, the Jordan Community Living Room officially opened on 20 August. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Chan Kwok Ki, Chief Secretary for Administration; Mr Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare; Ms Alice Lau, Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare; Mr Edward To, Director of Social Welfare; Mr Jacob L. S. Chan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Hong Kong Children & Youth Services; Ms Nikki Ng, Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Director of Philanthropy of Sino Group; and Mr Victor Tin, Executive Director of Sino Group and other guests. Representatives from the government, the social service sector and the local community also attended to celebrate the launch of the project. The Community Living Room provides additional living space and community support services for subdivided unit households in Yau Tsim Mong District, fostering social inclusion and community wellbeing.
In his speech, Chief Secretary for Administration Mr Chan Kwok Ki said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for generously sponsoring this venue. Following the Community Living Rooms in Sham Shui Po, Hung Hom and Shau Kei Wan, this marks the Group’s fourth Community Living Room project, accounting for one-quarter of the more than ten Community Living Rooms established across Hong Kong. I thank them for their steadfast support. In addition, the Group has generously pledged to extend its sponsorship of the Sham Shui Po Community Living Room, Hong Kong’s first Community Living Room project, for a further five years.”
The Jordan Community Living Room is located in Yau Tsim Mong and operated by the Hong Kong Children & Youth Services. It is the fourth community living room project supported by the Foundation and Sino Group, following those in Sham Shui Po, Hung Hom and Shau Kei Wan. It spans approximately 3,200 square feet and is expected to serve around 400 subdivided unit households and 60,000 visits annually.
Yau Tsim Mong is one of Hong Kong’s districts with a high concentration of subdivided households and a diverse population, the Community Living Room offers a wide range of facilities, including a communal living area, study space, self-service laundry facilities, shower rooms, children’s play area and reading corner, helping families enjoy a more comfortable daily living and learning environment.
Designed to meet the needs of people from different cultural backgrounds, the Community Living Room includes halal-friendly cooking and dining areas and provides value-added services such as homework support, social welfare referrals, life skills advisory services, language classes, information technology training, and interest-based programmes. These initiatives help residents enhance their skills, expand social connections and integrate more easily into the community.
The Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation has long supported community-focused initiatives, including Community Living Rooms, partnering with the government, social welfare organisations and the wider community to address the needs of grassroots families. Through these efforts, the Foundation promotes mutual support and social inclusion, helping create a better living environment for those in need and fostering a more caring and inclusive society.
